Greenhouse Gas, Carbon Reporting & Data Verification?: New NCSI Division has the answers...

As one of Australia’s foremost independent certification bodies, NCS International offers a range of independent assurance initiatives to help industry demonstrate environmental credentials. Watch NCS International's video on ISO 14064 and the October 2009 emissions reporting deadline here.

Changing environmental norms, coupled with new commercial risks and social expectations, increasingly challenge corporations to show even greater commitment to sustainability.  Successful enterprises must now not simply be seen to be green, but be keen to be green.  Businesses are shifting focus from merely complying with environmental regulations to anticipating and managing risk.  Consumers and retailers now demand environmentally preferable products and services.  Many of our clients’ customers now want eco-labelled products with low carbon footprints and proof of sustainability through the supply chain.

Companies and their boards, investors and insurers are increasingly concerned about climate change impacts and risks to business sustainability.  Under the Federal government’s National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act 2007 (NGERs), a large number of Australian businesses will have to monitor and report their greenhouse gas emissions and energy use.  Significant civil and criminal penalties, in excess of $220,000, can apply for failure to comply with the Act.  The Federal government’s emerging carbon emissions trading scheme is motivating companies to assess their capacity to adapt to a new carbon-constrained economy.  Companies need to assure stakeholders of their ability to effectively manage opportunities and risks associated with their carbon emissions and ensure business continuity.

Speaking about his new role, Nav said “One of our key aims is to develop targeted assurance services to provide confidence to our clients about their endeavours to reduce their carbon footprint and improve sustainability of their businesses.  A large number of businesses will, for the first time, be required to monitor and report energy use and greenhouse gas emissions.  We’ll provide assurance to businesses, from large industrial emitters to SMEs that publicly report their carbon footprint by independently auditing and certifying their greenhouse gas emissions declarations to international standards and benchmarks.  We will also certify carbon reduction and renewable energy projects that create bankable and tradable carbon credits”.
